Stepping Into a New Year

Following the goals I've finally set in place!

Stepping Into a New Year
Telisa Gardner

At the beginning of every new year, I plan to achieve my goals. I usually start off very strong and then suddenly stop caring and reject the idea constantly from my brain. Now when I look back, I am disappointed that I gave up and I promise myself that I will stick to the goals I want to reach. This year I plan to follow through and I don't know why it seems so attainable but I am ready to go every step of the way. Below are some of the goals I plan to achieve this year!

1. Getting enough sleep!

As a Bio major, I suffer from the early morning classes mandated by my college. I'll never understand why Bio majors are deemed to be fully functional at 7:30 in the morning! I plan to get enough sleep, at least 8 hours, so I can be awake for these classes.

2. Using my planner

This year I want to use my planner a lot more than last year. I start out strong with using my planner and then I kind of fall off the grid, misplace the planner, or tuck it away in my drawer and forget to check it for upcoming assignments. Usually the week of, the light bulb will go off and I'll remember, but of course it is too late and I'm pulling all nighters trying to prepare for a test I didn't have the time to study for!

3. Attend chapel every day

I'm really looking forward to this goal because of last year. I only attended chapel if I was performing or leading. I want to develop a better relationship with God and I know that attending chapel will inevitably strengthen my faith! This is one goal I am extremely excited about!

4. Using my time more wisely

We all have those moments when if we're free, we want to just relax. Living on campus allows me to just go into my room and sleep until my next class. I study biology and it's a rigorous program so, I feel that I should be using all the free time I have this year, preparing myself for my next class or simply reviewing my notes. Doing this will undoubtedly make a difference in how I perform on test and quizzes.

5. Getting some "me" time

I tend to forget that I matter sometimes. I often find myself not caring how I look, forgetting to eat, and never taking a minute just to breathe. This year I want to focus on my studies, but I also plan to focus on myself by giving myself the mental health day that I deserve!

6. Reading a lot more

I am disappointed in myself because of the lack of reading I've done this past year. I love to read and unless it was required I didn't pick up a single book. This year, I want to make it my goal to read a lot more, this can be a short story or a long novel, I just want to read because it's something I've always done and something I want to get back into.

7. Sell items on my Poshmark

So, I just started reusing Poshmark but I want to sell some of the items I've listed. It's not a major goal but I can get rid of the things I no longer want and earn some extra cash on the side. It'll be pretty epic when I make my first sale!

8.Master the F, Cm, and Bm chords on my guitar

So, I'm a confident guitar player, especially with open chords. Once I conquer this fear of playing barre chords, such as F, Cm, and Bm, I will be able to learn how to play the difficult songs and also learn how to arpeggio open and barre chords.

9. Save money

This summer I splurged more than I should have but the semester will begin soon and I need to pay all of my graduation fees and save so I can live on my own after college. It's definitely a challenge but I think I will be okay if I learn how to budget.

10. Going home for Thanksgiving!

This year I plan to spend this holiday with my family, who recently relocated to Georgia. It should be fun and exciting because I haven't been home since my family moved. I actually have not had a real Thanksgiving in a while.

11. Catching up on all of my favorite shows!

It's a minor goal but still very important. I am so behind in some of my shows so I guess I will have to make more time or find some balance between class and work.

Therefore, I am really excited for the upcoming year and I look forward to reaching my goals. I know it's not going to be easy, it may in fact be the most difficult thing I have to do, however, Rome wasn't built in a day, and as cliche as that sounds, by taking one step at a time, this new year will be a successful one for me!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
