On this week's Decoder, I sat down with Hinge founder and CEO Justin McLeod to talk about the state of online dating â and how AI might change everything about how people use apps like Hinge and the relationships they form on them. A fair warning here: Iâve never actually used a dating app â the algorithm that matched my wife and me was the university housing lottery, which put us in adjacent dorm rooms in the fall of 2000. And my wife is now a divorce lawyer, so playing around with these apps seems a little bit risky. So I always end up approaching conversations about dating apps a little bit removed. But the AI bit is a really big piece of what's happening in online dating, and you'll hear Justin and I really get into it here. Hinge, as part of Match Group, is using AI both internally and within its product for AI coaching features and even message filtering. But pull the string on all these ideas, and you get to a place where people might be talking to AI all the time, even falling in love with it, or having AI agents dating each other before meeting in person. Justin had some pretty strong feelings here: he called the idea of AI companionship âplaying with fireâ and compares those relationships to junk food. There's a lot going on here; it's a good one. We have a special episode of Decoder out today. I sat down last week in Mountain View with Google CEO Sundar Pichai in what has now become an annual Decoder tradition. This is the third time we've talked right after the company's Google I/O developer conference, and this year there was a lot to talk about. Google made a ton of AI announcements at I/O, including the company's new AI Mode for search, a bunch of model news around Gemini and video generation, and even a new pair of prototype Android-powered smart glasses. So I got the opportunity to ask Sundar about all of this, and to also really dive deep into where he sees the AI industry today and what phase of the major AI platform shift we might be entering into next. Of course, I couldnât let this go without asking about the major antitrust trials that Google is involved in, including the governmentâs demand that Google sell Chrome, and what the negotiations with the Justice Department have involved. Thereâs a lot in this one â Iâm eager to hear what you all think of it. Check out a clip below, and you can read, watch or listen to the full interview over at The Verge: https://lnkd.in/ePGNRXUS

Castañon, who joined the brand seven years ago as beauty director, will now lead editorial strategy across platforms focusing on talent-first storytelling and a renewed commitment to joy.
